What to Do If You Have a Fever While Traveling in Kyushu: A Medical Guide for International Travelers
If you suddenly develop a fever while traveling in Kyushu, you may have many concerns: “Where can I see a doctor?” “Can I receive medical care if I don’t speak Japanese?” “What should I do if I feel too unwell to leave my hotel?”
For international travelers visiting Japan, finding appropriate medical care in an unfamiliar place can be challenging. Not all medical facilities in Japan offer services in foreign languages, and some clinics are closed at night, on weekends, and on public holidays.
At Kyushu International Clinic, we provide medical consultations and support for international travelers throughout Kyushu, including Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima.

What Should You Do First If You Develop a Fever While Traveling?
A fever can have many possible causes, including the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, and gastroenteritis.
In addition to fever, you may experience other symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, chills, muscle aches, nausea, or diarrhea.
While you may want to continue with your travel plans, it is important not to push yourself if you have a fever. Make sure to get plenty of rest and stay well hydrated.
However, it can be difficult to determine the cause based on symptoms alone. If you have a persistent high fever, your symptoms are getting worse, or you are concerned about your condition, we recommend consulting a doctor.
What Should International Travelers Prepare When Visiting a Medical Facility in Japan?
When visiting a medical facility in Japan, having your passport and travel insurance information ready can help make the process smoother.
If you are currently taking any medications, prepare the names or photos of those medications if possible. It is also important to tell the doctor about any existing medical conditions, previous illnesses, and allergies to medications or foods.
If you have a fever, it can also be helpful to organize information such as when the fever started, the highest temperature you have recorded, and whether you have any other symptoms such as a cough or sore throat. Providing this information can help the consultation proceed more smoothly.
In-Clinic Care, Hotel Visits, and Other Options Based on Your Situation
At Kyushu International Clinic, we assess your symptoms, location, and the time of day to recommend an appropriate type of medical care.
In addition to in-clinic consultations at our facility, if you are too unwell to go out, we may be able to arrange a hotel visit, in which a medical professional visits your hotel or other accommodation, depending on your location, the time of day, and staff availability.
If a hotel visit is not available, or if your condition is considered suitable for remote assessment, you may also be able to consult a doctor online from your hotel or accommodation.
If medication is required after your consultation, we may also be able to arrange medication delivery to your hotel or accommodation, depending on the circumstances.
We Can Also Assist If You Need Tests or Specialized Medical Treatment
Depending on the cause of your fever and your overall condition, further testing, such as blood tests or diagnostic imaging, or more specialized medical treatment may be necessary.
In such cases, we can help direct you to an appropriate medical facility based on your symptoms.
For international patients who are concerned about receiving medical care in Japanese, we may also be able to arrange for a staff member to accompany you to the medical facility and provide support, including interpretation during your visit.
If you are unsure which hospital or clinic to visit in Japan, or if you are worried about explaining your symptoms in Japanese, please contact us for assistance.
Seek Medical Attention Promptly for Severe Abdominal Pain, Vomiting Blood, or Blood in the Stool
Some cases of abdominal pain or vomiting may be caused by conditions that require urgent medical attention.
If you experience severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, bloody or black stools, changes in consciousness, an inability to keep down fluids, or rapidly worsening symptoms, you may require urgent medical evaluation.
In an emergency, consider calling 119, Japan’s emergency number for an ambulance.
