One of the highlights of traveling in Kyushu is enjoying the local food. However, while traveling, you may suddenly experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

“Did I just eat too much?” “Could it be food poisoning?” “Should I go to a hospital?” “I don’t speak Japanese—where can I get medical help?”

Experiencing abdominal pain or vomiting while traveling abroad can be stressful, not only because of the symptoms themselves, but also because you may need to find medical care in an unfamiliar place.

At Kyushu International Clinic, we provide medical consultations and support for international travelers throughout Kyushu, including Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima.

Abdominal Pain and Vomiting While Traveling Can Have Many Causes

Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea while traveling can have many possible causes, including gastroenteritis, food poisoning, overeating, and alcohol consumption.

However, depending on the location and severity of the abdominal pain and how your symptoms develop, there may be an underlying condition that requires further testing or treatment.

For this reason, you should not ignore your symptoms or force yourself to continue sightseeing simply because you are traveling. If your symptoms persist or gradually worsen, it is important to consult a doctor.

Be Aware of Dehydration If Vomiting or Diarrhea Continues

Repeated vomiting or diarrhea can cause your body to lose not only fluids but also electrolytes, which may lead to dehydration.

You should be particularly careful if you are vomiting repeatedly and are unable to keep down fluids, if you are urinating much less than usual, or if you experience severe dizziness or lightheadedness.

Even if your symptoms are mild, avoid drinking a large amount of fluid all at once. Instead, try to take small amounts of fluid frequently, as much as you can tolerate.

In-Clinic Care and Hotel Visits Are Available Depending on Your Situation

If you are experiencing severe abdominal pain or nausea, finding a medical facility and traveling there in an unfamiliar area can be a significant burden.

At Kyushu International Clinic, we can provide in-clinic consultations at our facility. Depending on your location, the time of day, your condition, and staff availability, we may also be able to arrange a hotel visit, in which a medical professional visits your hotel or other accommodation.

If a hotel visit is not available, or if your condition is considered suitable for remote assessment, you may also be able to consult a doctor online from your hotel or accommodation.

If medication is required after your consultation, we may also be able to arrange medication delivery to your hotel or accommodation, depending on the circumstances.

If Further Tests Are Needed, We Can Help Arrange and Accompany You to a Medical Facility

Depending on the cause of your abdominal pain or vomiting, you may need further medical evaluation or treatment, such as blood tests, diagnostic imaging, or intravenous (IV) fluids.

In such cases, we can help direct you to an appropriate medical facility where the necessary tests or treatment are available.

For international travelers, another common concern is: “Even if I can get to a hospital, will I be able to explain my symptoms in Japanese?”

At Kyushu International Clinic, we may be able to arrange for a staff member to accompany you to the medical facility and provide support, including medical interpretation during your visit.

From finding an appropriate medical facility to assisting you during your visit, we provide support based on your individual situation.

Seek Medical Attention Promptly for Severe Abdominal Pain, Vomiting Blood, or Blood in the Stool

Some cases of abdominal pain or vomiting may be caused by conditions that require urgent medical attention.

If you experience severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, bloody or black stools, changes in consciousness, an inability to keep down fluids, or rapidly worsening symptoms, you may require urgent medical evaluation.

In an emergency, consider calling 119, Japan’s emergency number for an ambulance.
